World Wildlife Day

It’s WORLD WILDLIFE DAY, so I want to blog something in celebration of all of the world’s wild animals and plants, and the contribution they make to our lives and the health of the planet.

On breakfast tv this morning there was a quick piece on an article about extinction. As the piece ended one tv presenter said words that just didn’t do the piece any justice; he said ‘but how extinct are they?’. The other presenter tried to save the day, but in a second or two on tv what can you do? – she threw out a number of how few of the particular animal there was left, no doubt with a feeling of some failure as the piece ended.

The problem was the first presenter had totally zoned out on the importance of the piece. It brought back the memory of a discussion I had with a parent whose child had just thrown a golf ball at the head of my own child. The other parent ended our discussion with ‘but how hard did he throw it?’. Those fatal words. Those words told me: the other parent had zoned out. They had absolutely no interest in the issue at stake.

To those who CARE, to those who realise, how amazing our natural planet is, I wish you a special WORLD WILDLIFE DAY. One that will refresh your love of wildlife and desire to protect it, no matter what.
